The Research

Brain and Mind Centre

University of Sydney · Clinical Research Partner

The Brain and Mind Centre (BMC) is a multidisciplinary research institute at the University of Sydney, internationally recognised for pioneering translational research in youth and adult mental health. Led by Professor Ian Hickie AO, the BMC has developed evidence-based frameworks that underpin Australia's national approach to mental health staging and assessment.

The BMC's multidimensional clinical framework — covering domains from mood and anxiety through to social and occupational functioning — provides the clinical reasoning foundation that MIA encodes. Their two decades of validated instruments, clinical guidelines, and treatment protocols across care levels 1–5 form MIA's Knowledge Bank.

Clinical staging model
Transdiagnostic staging framework for mapping clinical need from mild to severe.
Multidimensional framework
Assessment across biological, psychological, and social domains — not single-diagnosis labels.
IAR-DST instrument
Validated decision support tool covering 8 clinical domains with structured scoring.
Treatment protocols
Evidence-based care pathways matched to levels 1–5 across clinical presentations.
Expert evaluator authoring
Specialists directly authored the reasoning MIA uses — not passive labelling.
Ongoing feedback cycles
Clinicians continuously review and refine MIA's outputs through structured feedback loops.

The Technology

UNCAPT

Agentic AI Platform · Technology

UNCAPT is an Australian AI company that builds agentic AI systems for specialist-grade decision support. UNCAPT's platform provides the infrastructure layer that powers MIA — including the OODA-based reasoning engine, the expert training platform used by clinicians to encode their reasoning, and the secure Azure-hosted cloud environment that meets healthcare data standards.

UNCAPT's role is to translate the BMC's clinical expertise into a production-grade AI system — handling the engineering of conversational assessment, real-time domain scoring, completeness auditing, and care plan generation, while ensuring the clinician remains in the loop at every stage.

Agentic reasoning engine
OODA-based controller with tool routing, memory, evaluation harness, and chain-of-reasoning logging.
Expert training platform
Enables specialists to converse with MIA, edit thought processes, and produce fine-tuning datasets.
Knowledge bank infrastructure
Ingestion, vectorisation, contradiction analysis, and query engine over curated clinical evidence.
Conversational assessment
Natural-language clinical interviews with real-time completeness tracking across domains.
Real-time domain scoring
Live confidence scoring across the multidimensional framework as data is collected.
Azure AU deployment
Australian-hosted secure cloud with enterprise-grade observability and healthcare compliance.
